Who Am I
Hi, I'm Filita Barker, the founder of STEAM Funk Education. I'm a passionate educator and facilitator. I worked as an Electrical Engineer for 20 years following my passion for maths, technology, science and engineering. I love sharing the knowledge I have gained with the next generation. Working for TAFE, teaching instrumentation and control, gives me an outlet for some of my passions. Teaching aviation theory ticks a few more boxes. But tutoring 1 on 1 is where my passion really comes alive. Each lesson is a new experience. I live for the light bulb moments and students achieving their goals.
The Arts side of STEAM Funk comes from my passion for music and crafts. I play Double Bass, Electric Bass, Euphonium and Tuned percussion. My crafts are dressmaking, embroidery, crochet and woodworking. I am also into bullet journaling and drawing.
What else do I do? Well I fly helicopters, drive a vintage car named Harold and ride a motorbike. I also dance ceroc, tap and rock 'n' roll.
Let’s learn together! Drop us an email to get started! I promise it will be fun!
I volunteer as a Home Library Service selector and courier. I run the LEGO club at Dee Why and Mona Vale libraries.
I play the double bass, performing with the ensemble for 8 concerts throughout the year. These concerts have other community or school ensembles also playing. I am involved in running the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival. Which brings together school ensembles from all over the Northern Beaches to perform and learn.
I am a proud supporter of the Streetsmart Handbook.
